Learner Outcomes achieved by this WebQuest for
Science 9 Unit A: Biological Diversity
4. Identify impacts of human action on species survival and variation within species, and analyze related issues for personal and public decision making
• describe the relative abundance of species on Earth and in different environments
• describe ongoing changes in biological diversity through extinction and extirpation of native
species, and investigate the role of environmental factors in causing these changes
• evaluate the success and limitations of various local and global strategies for minimizing loss of
species diversity
Additional Skill and Attitude Outcomes
Suggestions for the Project:
Because the students will be sharing their Google Sites with you at the beginning of the project we suggest using this as a means to formatively assess group progress and student contribution. We also recommend starting the project on a Monday, giving the students the weekend to individually work and complete their website.
Suggestions for Lesson Planning:
Rhino poaching can be used as a referenced example throughout the unit. For example the students can use their knowledge of Rhinos to develop food webs and investigate the interaction between various species.
One activity we suggest is a thought experiment proposing the following: What would happen to the ecosystem a Rhino lives in, if this species was to go extinct? This is directly linked to the STS outcome 1.3.
